Welcome to the Journey.
Well, this is the beginning of a journey. For 10 months or so, I have been sitting on the idea of starting a blog. But as we went into lockdown, it was so easy to push aside some of the dreams and the goals that I had for the year. 2020 was a year full of unmet expectations, and for a while, I was willing to put my love for writing on the backburner, and just coast through this global pandemic. Then in May everything change. I’ll never forget opening up my laptop, checking the news (which I do every morning), and hearing about the murder of Ahmaud Arbery. As I read about the events that transpired, I got so angry that I start to write.
I'll never forget the first post. It truly came from just being weary down to my bones. I was so tired of seeing another black man murdered by the very authorities who had sworn to protect them, so I started writing. I remember pressing “post” on the Instagram stories that I had written, and going to bed, thinking that, (1) not a lot of people would read it or care, and (2) that I would probably get some pushback for posting about this. To my surprise, it connected with people across Canada, and was a catalyst for conversations about racism and faith.
I’ll be honest with you, starting this blog was a lot more about me and a lot less about you than you would probably think. In the age of social media influencers, I feel a little out of place. I’m not here to sell you products (although if some brand would like to give me free stuff, hit me up), and I’m not here to show you the latest trends in fashion or makeup (mostly because I don’t know what they are). My goal is to start a conversation, to share some of my thoughts, and to hear the thoughts of others. There are a lot of voices out there, but I hope to provide a thoughtful commentary on some of the subjects that I’m passionate about.
I’ll be honest with you, starting this blog was a lot more about me and a lot less about you than you would probably think. In the age of influencers, I feel a little out of place. My goal is to share my thoughts with whoever wants to listen, whether that looks like 5 people or 500. I’m inviting you all onto this journey with me. It will be fun, messy, and full of surprises, but I couldn’t be more excited to embark on this with all of you.
